What is Free Play in the Community?
We offer fun, free play sessions which are aimed for children aged 5 to 13 years old.
The Play ranger team operate play sessions in the parks and green spaces in and around Stranraer, with the aim of encouraging children to get up and go out to play, to meet new people and make new friends.
The way this play works is that it is unstructured enabling children to use their own imagination. The Play Rangers and Volunteers who take the sessions do take a small amount of equipment along to encourage play. Sometimes it can be a parachute, sometimes it is arts and crafts material—and it is up to the children what they want to do.
The children are encouraged to use their imagination and the surrounding environment to come up with fun activities, and we are out in rain, snow, sunshine and windy days so you imagine the fun that can be had!
We believe enabling children to play freely away from computers and games with rules can increase a child’s confidence and their physical activity levels whilst just having fun.
