What is YPlay in the Community?
Y Play in the Community is now a well established household name in Stranraer. We offer fun, free play session which are aimed for children aged 5 to 13 years old.
The Play ranger team operate play sessions in the parks and green spaces in and around Stranraer, with the aim of encouraging children to get up and go out to play, to meet new people and make new friends.
The service was established in April 2010 and up until March 2011 approximately 1000 children from Stranraer and surrounding area have ‘come out to play’.
The play on offer is free play, it is unstructured enabling children to use their own imagination. The Play Rangers and Volunteers who take the sessions do take a small amount of equipment along to encourage play. Sometimes it can be a parachute, sometimes it is arts and crafts material—and it is up to the children what they want to do.
The children are encouraged to use their imagination and the surrounding environment to come up with fun activities, and we are out in rain, snow, sunshine and windy days so you imagine the fun that can be had!
We believe enabling children to play freely away from computers and games with rules can increase a child’s confidence and their physical activity levels whilst just having fun.
